A comparison
of anxiety in boys and girls
How does
anxiety manifest itself in boys?
Research has shown that boys tend to have more severe forms of anxiety disorders,
especially attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder. It was
mistakenly believed that more women than men suffer from anxiety.
a.
Young boys who suffer from anxiety tend to be more irritable and short-tempered
compared to their female counterparts.
b.
Adolescent
males and teenagers with anxiety show
resistance to authority, which can cause problems between them and older
friends or family, as well as teachers at school. Attempts to punish this
behavior tend to make the anxiety worse.
c.
Anxious
teenagers often have suicidal thoughts.
Girls tend to be more affected by these thoughts than boys, but boys are more
likely to follow through on their threats and actually try to kill. That is, an
anxious girl will think about committing suicide but is less likely to attempt
it, while an anxious adolescent boy is more likely to attempt suicide.
d.
Anxious
adolescent boys are more likely than their female
counterparts to turn to alcohol and other addictive substances to relieve
anxiety. So if a teenage boy starts abusing alcohol, then one possibility is that
he is masking an anxiety disorder. Peer pressure is, of course, the main cause
of alcohol consumption by teenagers.
e. Some forms of anxiety disorders manifest themselves more clearly in children and adolescent males than in females. For example, generalized anxiety disorder, social phobia, and acute panic attacks are more common in men.
Anxiety in
girls
Girls are considered more prone to developing anxiety and at a younger age.
However, this has not been scientifically proven. The fact is that anxiety occurs
equally in adolescent males and females. This misconception stems from the fact
that women are more likely to talk openly about their problems, while men hide
or engage in activities that help mask their anxious moments. These are the
signs of anxiety in girls:
A.
Anxious girls tend to exhibit excessive crying that appears to be purposeless and
unprovoked. This is an early sign of anxiety in a young girl.
B.
Girls are
more prone to developing
obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) than their male counterparts, which can be
severe enough to disrupt their relationships with peers.
C.
Most girls
are constantly worried and open about their
feelings. This fact facilitates their use in the treatment of anxiety
disorders.
D.
Anxious girls suffer not only from more severe forms of social phobia, but also from
other phobias including fear of objects, heights, travel and animals.
E.
Withdrawal is
more pronounced in girls than in boys. This may
be because girls are more playful and any slight decrease in their activity level
is easily noticeable.
F.
Somatic
symptoms or problems, such as painful body
parts, stomach aches and headaches, are seen more in anxious girls than in
boys. Some pain is severe enough to require hospital visits and even attempts
at medical treatment.
G. Girls or teens suffering from anxiety may exhibit other symptoms such as perfectionism and skepticism.
